Out of the Past (1947)

Director: Jacques Tourneur
Starring: Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas
Synopsis:
A former private eye is tracked down by an old client who want him to do a job to settle old debts.
Impressions:
I knew about Robert Mitchum doing some noir stuff in the 70s, including playing Philip Marlowe twice, but I mostly associated his earlier career with Westerns and war movies. I didn't realize that he made a name for himself in noir during the genre's heyday. He's really good at it too, rivaling Humphrey Bogart as a tough, savvy and world-weary detective. Though Kirk Douglas doesn't have a lot of screentime, he's still solid in the villain role. The story has plenty of tricks and treachery. It's a worthwhile watch for any noir fan.
