The Three Musketeers (1993)

Director: Stephen Herek
Starring: Chris O'Donnell, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt
Synopsis:
A brash young swordsman travels to Paris in the hopes of joining the Musketeers, only to get wrapped up in a plot against the King.
Impressions:
I imagine I have a particular fondness for this film because I saw it when I was young. Purists to the source probably won't appreciate this much, but if you enjoy it for the fun romp that it is, you'll have a good time. I suppose the eponymous Three Musketeers tend to overshadow D'Artagnan anyway, but poor Chris O'Donnell seems rather hopelessly outmatched by the power trio of Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and Charlie Sheen. Platt is particularly amusing as Porthos. While I appreciate the more nuanced portrayals you get in the Richard Lester version, Tim Curry delights with his over-the-top scenery-chewing villainy as Cardinal Richelieu and Michael Wincott does a nicely sinister Rochefort. Sets and costuming are well-done and we get some pretty good swashbuckling as well. The theme song "All for Love" is fairly memorable, especially if you have nostalgia for the sort of award bait songs they used to do a lot back in the 80s and 90s. It's a fun watch and I gladly recommend it.
