Prisoners (2013)

Director: Denis Villeneuve
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis

Synopsis:
When the police investigation goes nowhere, a desperate father takes the law into his own hands to find his daughter's kidnapper.

Impressions:
Most people are apt to joke that kidnapping Wolverine's daughter is really, really bad idea. In all seriousness, though, this is a taut abduction thriller that explores just how far a man will go when pushed hard enough. There are some good twists and turns. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gylenhaal's performances are particularly strong and Paul Dano wasn't bad either as the simpleminded Alex Jones (no, not that Alex Jones). I was hoping for Terrence Howard to be more of an equal partner, but he does serve the purpose of being a counterbalance to Jackman's character. Bear in mind that there's plenty of torture and other sinister themes (to the degree that this film had to make some judicious cuts before release to avoid being rated NC-17), so if you're in any way squeamish or faint of heart, you may want to avoid this one, but if you want to see a dark character study, give it a watch.
